Training cards developed for the KYTS Programme

These training ‘flashcards’ were developed following the ColaLife Operational Trial in Zambia (COTZ)*. They have been approved by Zambia’s Ministry of Health and are used for training community health workers (CHWs) and Kit Yamoyo retailers in the prevention of diarrhoea and the treatment of diarrhoea with ORS and Zinc. All trainees are given a set of cards to take away after the training.

CHWs are encouraged to carry the cards with them at all times to remind them of the key messages when talking to mothers about diarrhoea in general and Kit Yamoyo specifically. Retailers are encouraged to keep the cards to hand in their shop, so they can explain to customers key health messages, the benefits of the product and when to go to the clinic.

The cards incorporate all the lessons learned from the trial both in terms of content and format. They are relatively cheap to produce and can be printed on-demand locally in Zambia. They are A6 in size so that they can be easily carried.

The cards within the set fall into 2 categories: Product specific and Generic. The product specific cards refer to the Kit Yamoyo product while the generic ones contain the key messages on the prevention and treatment of diarrhoea (ORS and Zinc). The generic cards can be used ‘stand-alone’. The cards are double-sided so that retailers and CHWs can write keywords in their own language on the back during their training course, so they can pass on messages effectively,  clearly and consistently in their community.

Printing instructions

1. The full set of cards is supplied as 11 high resolution PDF files, one for each card.
2. Download the whole set (all 11 files)
3. Each file is a 2-page document; page one contains 4 images of the front of the card and page two contains 4 images of the back of the card
4. For double-sided cards,proceed as follows:
   1. Print each document back-to-back onto card (for a top quality result, use card with a gloss finish on the front and satin finish on the back)
   2. Cut each sheet of card into 4 using the marks on the reverse of the card as a guide
5. If you cannot print double-sided, then just print page one of each document.
6. Punch a hole in the top left of each card and use a ribbon or piece of string to keep them together in the right order.
