About This Project

The Cholera Emergency Response Project was implemented by Keepers Zambia Foundation in partnership with Oxfam Zambia in response to a severe cholera outbreak affecting Zambia. The project focused on cholera-prone peri-urban communities where poor sanitation and limited access to clean water increased vulnerability. It aimed to reduce cholera-related morbidity and mortality through rapid response interventions, hygiene promotion, and improved access to safe water and sanitation practices. Through coordinated efforts with the Ministry of Health, local authorities, and community volunteers, the project strengthened community-level prevention and response systems.

Key Objectives

1

Reducing cholera-related morbidity and mortality

2

Improving hygiene practices at household and community level

3

Strengthening community awareness and early response systems

4

Increasing access to essential WASH supplies

5

Supporting public health systems during the outbreak

Key Activities

Community Awareness and Hygiene Promotion

The project trained 75 Community-Based Volunteers (CBVs) to lead door-to-door awareness campaigns.

These efforts reached over 110,000 people with critical hygiene and cholera prevention messages, improving knowledge and behaviour at community level.

Distribution of WASH Supplies

WASH Non-Food Items (NFIs), including chlorine, oral rehydration solution (ORS), soap, and tapped buckets, were distributed to over 22,500 households.

This intervention directly benefited 95,147 people by improving access to safe water and hygiene materials.

Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs)

A total of 30 Oral Rehydration Points were established to provide immediate support to affected individuals.

These points offered rehydration services and health information, reducing pressure on health facilities and improving early treatment.

School-Based Interventions

Schools were supported with handwashing facilities and hygiene education.

A total of 376 teachers and over 47,000 pupils benefited from improved hygiene practices and awareness.

Community Engagement and Innovation

The project used innovative approaches such as community drama performances to raise awareness and encourage behaviour change.

Collaboration with local stakeholders also supported sanitation efforts, including toilet desludging in affected areas.
